Why the Commodore?

The Commodore, a St Paul landmark, originally opened in 1920, the same year Prohibition went into effect. A speakeasy operated in the basement of the hotel and was frequented by F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife, Zelda.  It also attracted some notorious out-of-towners, including members of murderous matriarch Ma Barker’s gang, and possibly even Al Capone himself. Once Prohibition ended, the Commodore opened an above-ground (and legal, this time) bar with stunning Art Deco detail.

F. Scott Fitzgerald, a Minnesota native and regular at the Commodore bar, is one of Will’s favorite authors. The reading at Will and Sarah’s wedding was from an F. Scott novel; that is why we chose the Commodore as the venue for the Minnesota celebration!
